On November 21, ten volunteers from VSO (Voluntary Services Overseas) joined hands with Team Buhara members to construct a home for three new pigs. Together, we prepared the land for three acres of corn, which will feed the animals, as well as building their pen and preparing the caretaking schedule.
We are very thankful to VSO, who has partnered with Team Buhara in HIV/AIDS outreach in the past, for accepting our proposal to initiate this project.
Within ten months, our piglets will give birth to 9-12 piglets each. We will raise nearly $500 within two years. In Uganda, this can support school fees for all 22 learners.
Each Saturday, our learners gather to dance, sing and spend time together. The Team Buhara dance troupe often performs for visitors or at special occasions like the recent HIV/AIDS Sensitizaton Sunday. However, the children were recently paid for their services for the first time! ______ hired Team Buhara youth, paying them 10,000 ugandan shillings ($5) for their time. They have decided to use the money to buy new plates and cups for children and parents to use at organization events.
The vegetable plantation, which is cared for by the children and parents of Team Buhara, provides nutritious vegetables for the families, supplementing often limited diets. In addition, Atwooki, who is the agricultural expert working for the project, teaches the families sustainable methods for growing profitable and nutritious foods. So far, we have had three successful harvests, and children have gone home happily with vegetables. We are now working to increase the yield, and sell the vegetables locally.
Team Buhara owns a swath of land, on which the vegetables are grown and the dance troupe practices. In addition, there is a fish pond which is soon to be restocked. Fish are rich in important nutrients and are a little seen commodity in this land locked country. With local Nile Birch, we will be able to generate income to continue our programs.
Although in Uganda, chickens and their eggs often earn only a small profit, nevertheless, they can be a source of income. An obvious additional benefit is the incredible nutrition value in a place where sources of protein are so scarce.
