Skills
Team Buhara is always growing and learning. We are new to many aspects of this project, and we are learning from people like you. Share with us what you know: we are looking for help in the areas of grant writing, fundraising, website management, health and so many other areas. Some examples of partnerships formed thus far include:
- Borough of Manhattan Community College students in a web-design class volunteered to create our website, offering Team Buhara the opportunity to make its voice heard.
- The literary magazine Armchair/Shotgun partnered with Team Buhara to run an advertisement, increasing funding.
- A student from the Pan American International High School in Queens fulfills internship hours with Team Buhara, learning to write grants.
- Young People First, a new non-profit which involves young people in political decision making, serves as a mentor as we register as a non-profit.
- What do you know, that you can share to strengthen Team Buhara? We are eager to hear from you!
Time
LEND A HELPING HAND
Volunteer time to help Team Buhara
As is the case for so many new organizations, time equals growth and social change. So many kind partners of Team Buhara have donated their time, organizing informal fundraising potlucks, plodding through the logistics of non-profit status, and editing website content. We are working as fast as we can, but we always appreciate an extra hand! Let us know if you’d like to volunteer your time, and we will connect you with work that will allow Team Buhara to continue to transform its Ugandan community.
Funds
Give Support to Buhara Health
- 8% of Buhara is HIV positive throught testing
- $5.50 buys CD4 (HIV testing prior to treatment)
- Test is the difference between life and death for many.
As we develop initiatives for self-sustainability, we remain grateful for financial and material support from individuals like you.
Previous donations have included:
- Funds raised by school groups through movie nights, bake sales and a penny drive.
- Funds raised through craft sales, yard sales and clothing swaps.
- Private donations as large as $500 and as small as $10. For our rural Ugandan community, $10 buys two uniforms, or two pairs of shoes, or two mosquito nets. We thank you for any amount you are able to contribute.
- Medical supplies to enhance Buhara Village’s local clinic.
- School supplies to alleviate the financial burden of purchasing pens and paper.
- Children’s books, toys and soccer balls. In rural Uganda, our children grow up playing outside and creating games out of the plants they find around them. The balls they kick around are plastic bags wrapped together and they are often not exposed to children’s books. This means that the resourceful, fun-loving children of Buhara Village are even more delighted by the things that children elsewhere so often take for granted. If you have any lying around, pass them our way!
We would be delighted to hear your ideas!
In Uganda, we survive on the land, allowing us to eat and raise our families. For so many of us, however, we have no additional income. This makes expensive prospects like schooling and health care difficult to attain.
